classmate 1:  Wendy Morales Module Two (2) Reflection

Reading chapter 6-14 of the book “Finance: Applications and Theory” by Cornett and others gave me a better understanding of Module 2 FIN3400. In my opinion, the course content was simplified and detailed enough to cover key areas of corporate finance using individual examples. I was not only able to connect the core thematic areas but also perceived finance from a personal perspective. After the successful completion of the course, I believe I now have a better understanding on how to value bonds and stocks, characterize and estimate risk and return, as well as make capital budgeting decisions. Indeed, this course is suitable for non-finance major students to learn and practice finance.

As a student during my industrial attachment, I realized that the company I was working for was planning to introduce a new product line in the market. On attending the project briefing at the director’s office, I was delighted to see how concepts on capital budgeting and working capital management were being applied to evaluate the feasibility of the project. The finance director explained to the team that qualitative and quantitative factors needed to be considered before implementing the capital project. There was a slide presentation on NPV, IRR, PI, and the discounted payback period, which are capital budgeting techniques. I think the concerns of the director was on the expected level of return and investment risk associated with the project.

Cornett et al. (2019) provide elaborate and relevant examples of financial management topics that I found to be useful in undergraduate corporate finance. Any student studying corporate finance should understand the valuation of bonds and stocks as they inform decisions about financial markets and institutions (Brigham & Ehrhardt, 2017). Similarly, characterizing and estimating risk and return helps one to make appropriate decisions on suitable securities for investments. All in all, financial planning and management will always involve decision making based on qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Classmate 2:   Olivia Fernandez Reflection 2

information is very beneficial to me. We invest money into stocks when we know we will make money out of it. (Cornett, Adair, & Nofsinger, 2020) The stock market is something that needs to be followed closely. You can make a lot of money, but you can also lose a lot of money. The stock market is known to react to what is going on financially in the world so it’s important to keep that in mind (Cornett, Adair, & Nofsinger, 2020). Recently when COVID-19 started the stock market went down and, a lot of people took that opportunity to buy stocks. This module also teaches us how investors take higher risks expecting higher returns (Cornett, Adair, & Nofsinger, 2020). In this module, we learned how to calculate returns which help us determine if our investment would be a good one. All these formulas and theories that we used in this module are very valuable and will aid us in our life at some point.
